It was so great to connect with the fourth grade team to discuss, plan, and get excited about our social studies curriculum for next year. We met via Zoom to go over the existing curriculum map. Simone and Tammi explained how the curriculum has changed year-to-year, and I was able to share how I have developed my fourth grade social studies curriculum over the years. We discussed what we wanted to keep and areas that need the most development. We blended our ideas and came up with one essential question to shape our program for the year. We all took some time, independently, to go over the existing curriculum map, reformat/edit, and then add to areas that needed the most development. For each unit, we researched and added academic language, resources, and activities, as well as interdisciplinary opportunities, service learning and field trip ideas, and potential connections to the identity unit. We came back together to discuss and go over our new ideas. We also began thinking about how to intentionally design our social studies curriculum so that each unit draws in elements from what students are learning in math and language arts. I ended the day feeling energized to keep developing and designing!
